What it means
Anchor text sits in the HTML as the words between the link tags, while the destination is the URL. It can be exact, partial, branded or generic, such as “click here.” The nearest neighbour is an editorial backlink, which is the link a writer adds on merit; anchor text is only the label on that link, not the link type itself.
Why it matters when you buy software
SEO and link monitoring tools report anchor text distributions for your site and competitors. Those reports help you spot unnatural patterns, but they do not prove a product ranks well or that a link service is safe. Ask what data the tool uses, how often it refreshes and whether the feature is included in your plan tier.
How it works in practice
When an editor links to a guide, they often choose descriptive anchor text that names the topic. Campaigns that reuse the same commercial phrase on many sites can look coordinated. Use reports to audit your own profile and to compare competitors, not as a score for software quality.
