What a password manager is
A password manager stores logins in an encrypted vault and fills them into sites and apps. Most also generate passwords, store passkeys and share items with other people. Business plans add admin controls, policies, directory sync and single sign-on. Vendors describe the encryption model in different terms, and the zero knowledge encryption entry explains what that label means and what it costs a user who forgets a master password.
The 6 best password managers ranked
1. Bitwarden: 7.4/10
Bitwarden's free plan has no cap on passwords or devices and includes passkey management, Premium is $19.80 a year and Families is $47.88 a year for six users (vendor-sourced). G2 shows 4.6/5 from 1,342 reviews (review platform). The catch is that passwordless single sign-on is limited to the $6 Enterprise tier, and Capterra reviewers describe the interface as slightly dated.
2. 1Password: 7.3/10
1Password publishes SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO certifications, and has a 4.6 rating on G2 and a 4.7 rating from about 2,100 reviews on Capterra (review platform). Business adds identity provider integrations at $8.99 per user per month (vendor-sourced). The catch is that there is no free plan, Individual rose to $47.88 a year in March 2026 (third-party reported), and a lost Secret Key and master password leaves the account unrecoverable.
3. Dashlane: 6.8/10
Dashlane has 4.5/5 on G2 from 626 reviews and 4.5/5 on Capterra from 276 reviews for Dashlane for Business (review platform). It states SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certifications, and its business plans offer SAML 2.0 single sign-on and SCIM provisioning (vendor-sourced). The catch is that Premium costs more than most competitors, and reviewers report autofill that enters wrong details.
4. NordPass: 6.8/10
NordPass lists about 640 reviews on G2 for NordPass Business with a 4.5/5 rating, and third-party sources put Premium from $1.29 to $2.49 a month depending on the source (third-party reported). The catch is that independent reviewers report no phone support, the free plan allows one active device at a time, and the quoted entry prices renew higher.
5. Proton Pass: 6.8/10
Proton Pass includes email aliases on every plan, with 10 on the free plan and unlimited on paid plans, and Pass Plus is $2.99 a month with Family at $4.99 for up to six users (vendor-sourced). The apps are open source, and Proton states SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001. The catch is that the free plan allows 2 vaults and sharing with 2 people, and single sign-on is limited to Pass Professional.
6. LastPass: 6.5/10
LastPass has a free plan with unlimited password storage and autofill, and Capterra shows 4.6/5 from 2,782 reviews with G2 at 4.5/5 from about 2,056 (review platform). The catch is that the 2022 breach exposed customer metadata and the UK Information Commissioner's Office fined LastPass UK Ltd £1,228,283 in November 2025 (third-party reported). Single sign-on is also capped at 3 apps on Business.

How we ranked these tools
Each tool is scored out of 10 on six criteria: proof of results at 30%, output quality at 25%, ease of use at 15%, pricing and value at 15%, customer support at 10% and security and compliance at 5%. The overall score is the weighted average, rounded to one decimal. Scores come from desk research and aggregated public data, and every number on a review carries its source type. Tools with equal overall scores are listed by name, so Dashlane appears before NordPass and Proton Pass.
How to choose a password manager
- You want a free plan with no device cap: Bitwarden, whose free plan has unlimited passwords and devices.
- You want the strongest published security record: 1Password, which has the highest security and compliance sub-score at 9.0/10.
- You want email aliases and an end-to-end encrypted manager from a privacy-focused company: Proton Pass, which includes aliases on every plan.
- You want the lowest paid price: Bitwarden Premium at $1.65 a month billed annually (vendor-sourced), or NordPass from $1.29 on a two-year term, which renews higher (third-party reported).
- You need single sign-on for a team: check the tier first. Bitwarden's passwordless SSO is on Enterprise at $6 per user, Proton Pass needs Pass Professional at $4.99, LastPass caps SSO at 3 apps on Business, and 1Password adds identity provider integrations on Business at $8.99.
- The 2022 LastPass breach is a factor in your decision: the LastPass review sets out the incident, the ICO fine and the plan details.
What the scores show
Two of the six raised annual prices in 2026. 1Password's Individual plan went from $35.88 to $47.88 a year in March, and Bitwarden's Premium plan roughly doubled to $19.80 a year in early 2026 (third-party reported). Entry prices also mislead in other ways. NordPass quotes figures that renew higher after the first term, Dashlane's reported prices vary by source, and the free plans differ sharply: Bitwarden has no caps, LastPass and NordPass limit device use, and Proton Pass limits vaults and sharing. Security and compliance sub-scores run from 9.0 for 1Password to 5.0 for LastPass. Compare the renewal price and the free-plan limits, not only the first-year price.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free password manager?
Yes. Bitwarden's free plan has unlimited passwords and devices. LastPass has a free plan that is limited to one device type, NordPass's free plan allows one active device at a time, and Proton Pass's free plan has 10 aliases and 2 vaults. 1Password has no free plan, and sources disagree on whether Dashlane still has one.
Do these password managers hold SOC 2 certification?
All six reviews report that the vendor states a SOC 2 Type II or Type 2 attestation, which is vendor-sourced. The SOC 2 entry explains what the attestation covers. LastPass also lists ISO 27001, SOC 3 and BSI C5, and a 2019 vendor post says its SOC 2 report is available only under NDA.
Which password manager is best for families?
Bitwarden Families covers six users at $47.88 a year, 1Password Families covers up to five users at $5.99 a month billed yearly, and Proton Pass Family covers up to six users at $4.99 a month, all vendor-sourced. Reviewers report that NordPass Family plans lack shared folders.
