Xero review
Cloud accounting with no per-user fees, held back by reporting limits and no phone support
This Xero review scores the cloud accounting platform 7.0 out of 10: it charges no per-user fees and holds 4.4 out of 5 on both Capterra (about 3,295 reviews) and G2 (1,619 reviews), and it is published with ISO 27001 and SOC 2 reports. It falls short on reporting depth and phone support, and its plans start at $27 per month in the US, with prices that differ by region and rise on 1 November 2026 on the plans Xero listed for Ireland.

What Xero is and who it is for
Xero is cloud accounting software that covers invoicing, bills, bank reconciliation and, as an add-on, payroll. The vendor states that all plans carry no per-user license fees (vendor-sourced). Comparison sites describe it as a strong all-round choice with a feature set similar to QuickBooks at a lower price (third-party reported).
Xero suits small businesses that want unlimited users and broad integrations without paying per seat. A business that needs deep reporting, phone support or a strong built-in payroll should look at the alternatives below.
What Xero does
The core product handles quotes, invoices, bills and bank reconciliation. On the entry-level US plan, Early, you can send quotes and 20 invoices and enter 5 bills. The Growing and Established plans list no invoice or bill caps (vendor-sourced). Auto-reconcile costs $5.00 per month on Early and is included in Growing and Established. Inventory Plus is optional on Growing and Established and is not available on Early (vendor-sourced).
Payroll in the US is Xero Payroll, powered by Gusto. It costs $36 per month plus $6 per employee or contractor on all plans (vendor-sourced). One Capterra reviewer found the payroll add-on weaker than dedicated payroll software (review platform).
G2 reviewers praise transaction reconciliation and integrations. The most common criticism themes on G2 are reporting limitations (132 reviews), pricing (94 reviews) and the learning curve (review platform). Capterra reviewers mention technical glitches, reports that are hard to find, a slightly difficult mobile app and occasional slowness with very high data volumes (review platform).
On security, Xero publishes an ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certificate and SOC 2 reports from independent audits, and states PCI DSS v4.0 SAQ A compliance (vendor-sourced). It describes multi-factor authentication on its US security page (vendor-sourced). Customers have asked for single sign-on through Microsoft Entra ID and SAML on Xero's product ideas board for years, and Xero said in one thread that it cannot commit to development (self-reported, with a vendor reply). Teams that require identity provider sign-on should weigh that.
Xero pricing
Sources disagree on plan names and prices, so each figure below names its source.
US plans, billed monthly (vendor-sourced):
- Early: $27 per month, with an introductory $2.70 per month for the first 6 months.
- Growing: $59 per month, with an introductory $5.90 per month.
- Established: $97 per month, with an introductory $9.70 per month.
The 90% introductory offer for new US customers runs until 11:59pm UTC on November 2, 2026, and excludes add-ons, usage and payment fees. Xero reserves the right to change pricing at any time, and subscriptions renew monthly (vendor-sourced).
Other regions use different plan sets. Xero's Irish page lists USD pricing effective 1 November 2026 of Lite at $7 (unchanged), Starter rising from $29 to $32, Standard from $50 to $54 and Premium from $75 to $82 per month, and states that the multi-organisation discount ends the same day (vendor-sourced). A UK pricing guide updated in August 2026 lists Starter at £16, Standard at £37 and Premium at £50 per month (third-party reported). Aggregator sites list other US figures that conflict with the vendor page, so the vendor figures above are the ones to rely on.
Entry cost and total cost diverge. The introductory discount ends after 6 months, payroll adds $36 per month plus $6 per person, and auto-reconcile adds $5 per month on Early. Some reviewers say adding team members drives costs up sharply (third-party reported), which conflicts with the vendor's no per-user fee statement.
Xero pros
- The main pro in any Xero review is the volume and consistency of its ratings: 4.4 out of 5 on G2 from 1,619 reviews, 4.4 on Capterra from about 3,295 reviews, and about 4.1 on Trustpilot from more than 10,000 reviews (review platform).
- Xero reviewers on the Australian Capterra listing score ease of use at 4.4, features at 4.3 and value for money at 4.2, with 88% of reviews positive (review platform).
- All Xero plans carry no per-user license fees, which helps businesses with many users (vendor-sourced).
- Reviewers praise Xero for transaction reconciliation and integrations (review platform).
- Xero publishes ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and SOC 2 reports, and non-customers can request them through a form (vendor-sourced).
Xero cons
- Reporting limitations are the top criticism theme on G2, with 132 reviews, and Capterra reviewers describe reports as hard to find (review platform).
- There is no inbound phone number. The lack of phone support is the most common Trustpilot complaint, and some Capterra reviewers call support basic (review platform).
- The Early plan caps invoices at 20 and bills at 5, so growing businesses move up quickly (vendor-sourced).
- Pricing differs by region, rises on 1 November 2026 on the plans Xero listed for Ireland, and the headline US discount lasts 6 months (vendor-sourced).
- Native single sign-on through an identity provider is a long-running customer request that Xero has not committed to (self-reported).
How Xero compares
- QuickBooks Online: choose it when payroll matters most, since reviewers name it as the usual pick for payroll and it offers 24/7 support through a chatbot (third-party reported).
- Zoho Books: choose it when value and a free tier for small businesses matter, though reviewers rate its support below QuickBooks (third-party reported).
- FreshBooks: choose it for freelancer and invoicing-led work, with a base plan listed at $21 per month billed monthly (third-party reported).

Xero verdict
Xero earns a 7.0 for strong review platform evidence, unlimited users and published ISO 27001 and SOC 2 reports. It will not give you phone support or deep reporting. It is right for small businesses that want a widely reviewed cloud ledger with many integrations and no per-user fees. It is not right for teams that need phone support or stronger built-in payroll.
